Vitamin D for Your Mind, Body and Soul
Can you feel it in the air? Spring is finally here, so it's time to get outside. More time outdoors can give an extra bump to not only your fitness and nutrition but also that oh so important Vitamin D, which keeps your bones, teeth and muscles healthy while benefitting your mental health.
Here RISE instructors Allison Billingsley and Danielle Bollman share how they integrate workouts and meals to their time outside.
Getting Fit in Your Own Backyard
Still staying close to home or short on time? Check this video from Allison on an at-home, outdoor fitness routine that will work your entire body. Equipment needed? Just you and a stair.
Go Take a Hike
"There are so many great places, near and far, to hike around here and enjoy the great outdoors," says Danielle. "I'm planning to take a few excursions with the kids."
A one-hour hike can burn between 300-600 calories and provide the mental reset we all need! Danielle's plans include visiting:
Morton Arboretum
Herrick Lake
Swallow Cliff Stairs
Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve
Kettle Moraine
Become a Grill Master
"We tend to use our outdoor grill all year long but, with spring here, we use even more," says Danielle. "I've been making these turkey burgers for over 10 years now. Everyone in my family loves them and they're great warmed up. So, I usually make a double batch and grill all at once and then put the leftovers in the fridge. I place them on ciabatta bread or on top of a salad."
Gluten free? Bollman recommends Gillian's Original Bread Crumbs from Mariano's.
